Ethics in Action™ was created in 1994 in Vancouver, B.C., through a partnership between VanCity Savings Credit Union and The Workplace Ministry Society (now the
Workplace Centre for Spiritual and Ethical Development).
The Ethics in Action™ Awards event was founded with the belief that “ethics in action” should be celebrated in order to educate and inspire, and to demonstrate that businesses and other stakeholders can share in success—instead of competing for it.

By 1998, over 700 guests had attended the awards evening and 50 nominees had been profiled and celebrated. Media stories appeared in the Vancouver Sun, The Province, Business in Vancouver, the Vancouver Courier and many other local papers. Nominees have also been profiled on Global TV, BCTV, and VTV and on CKNW and CBC radio.
In 1999, Ethics in Action™ was successfully launched in Ontario, with Citizens Bank of Canada and Mountain Equipment Co-op as sponsors. The first awards ceremony in Ontario saw 26 nominations and 200 guests.
The Awards have brought much needed awareness and attention to the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility. Today more than ever, Corporate Social Responsibility is as good for business as it is for communities. Companies with socially responsible practices are experiencing enhanced brand image and reputation, improved financial results, increased loyalty from customers and employees, and reduced regulatory oversight.
However, the most important benefit is environmental and social sustainability, measured over the long term.
