Our mission is to celebrate businesses and business leaders that are helping to build a better future in British Columbia through socially and environmental sustainable corporate practices.

The BC Ethics in Action Society partners with the Better Business Bureau for the 2010 Green Award at the Torch Awards.

Come to the BBB Torch Awards Workshop

Mark your calendars next week for an opportunity to learn how to enter your company in BBB’s 2010 Torch Awards for Marketplace Ethics! We plan on having two of last year’s recipients discuss what made their company stand out from others.

Sarah Loewen, Marketing Manager from spud! (Green Award 2009) and Bailey Jung, President of Silver Bullet Shredding (Marketplace Excellence Award 2009) will be giving a brief overview of their companies.BBB will then conduct a workshop to guide attendees through the entry process.

Guidance and ideas will be offered for your business application including how to complete your entry, the judging criteria, and making available the winning entries from other BBBs across the nation.

This is an afternoon event, so come over to the BBB to learn and do a bit of networking.

2009 Green Award Winner - spud!

The Green Award is for businesses that blend financial success with a strong commitment to positive social and environmental outcomes. Social benefits include business practices that help revitalize neighbourhoods, create opportunities for marginalized groups, or otherwise strengthen and support community economic and social development. Positive environmental outcomes go beyond basic office recycling programs to minimize or mitigate pollution, waste, or carbon footprint associated with the business products, services and operations. Some businesses even find ways to generate impacts that benefit our environment and natural resources.

spud! was awarded the Green Award at the Torch Awards on Oct. 15. This online grocer is infused with sustainable practices on all levels of its business. This local organic grocer shows its customers how much energy consumption it took to deliver food to the customer’s door. It gives its customers food mile options to further reduce consumption. In this way the company engages consumer to become solutions. Spud! Has passionate employees; also hiring marginalized and disadvantaged people and connects local people with artisans.

Their warehouse model minimizes waste through its “just in time” ordering. In addition, it gives excess organic waste for compost to farmers, and gives extra food to the Food Bank. Spud! is very specific in their numbers clearly showing how they have achieved a carbon-neutral footprint. What the committee liked best was that the company provided education and solutions in a fun and engaging way.
